Chapter 2 - A New Home And A New Family
Flame twisted in his new mother's arms to peer at his new home.
They were standing in a clearing. It was plenty big enough for all of them to live there. There was a large slope in the ground, a kind of burrow. The burrow was plenty big and had a kind of soft moss growing in it. Flame discovered, after testing it out, that it was perfect for bedding. The burrow had a ledge that hung out over it. The ledge was about seven feet wide by nine feet across and covered the entire burrow. On rainy days the ledge kept rain from entering it. Around the entire outer ring of the burrow there was about a foot tall ring. That ring was made out of packed together earth and kept the rain water from flowing into it when it rained. Scarlet later explained to him that that was where they slept. Not far from the burrow where they slept was a medium sized stump. It was huge in diameter but was only about two and a half feet tall. Several medium sized rocks surrounded it. On further examination, Flame found several deep gauges dug into the stump. About two feet from the stump was a large boulder that had a medium size basin melted into it. Laying in the basin were two smaller rocks that had similar basins melted into them. Behind the boulder, there was a large burrow dug under the edge of it. Upon further investigation, Flame found that the burrow contained buried berries.
It was pretty quiet. '' Is it always this quiet?'' Flame asked. ''Oh, No Dear, the kids are out looking for berries.'' Scarlet said in her singsong voice.
"Aren't there any other Pokemon nearby?'' asked Flame. '' Dear, we live in a pretty secluded area because the other kids are so noisy. I'm sure you'll get along well. Infact, Here they come now.'' Scarlet answered, hearing the other kids coming towards the clearing.
"Mama!" yelled one of the kids as it ran into the clearing. Two other charmanders followed the young charmander into the clearing.
The last charmander to come into the clearing approached Scarlet and Flame at a calm pace.
"We found a ton of berries nearby. I can lead you to it later." Said the charmander, as its gaze slid to rest on Flame, "Who is this?"
"Flame, This is my oldest daughter. As I already told you she is sixteen and her name is Rosette." Scarlet told the silent boy. "Rosette, This is Flame."
Flame studied Rosette. She looked a little older than she was but that probably had something to do with how she acted and how she was posed. She was a couple inches shorter than Scarlet. Her claws, just like Scarlet's, glinted in the sun. Unlike most charmanders, her scales had a red tint to them. Her eyes had a studied look to them. That suggested that she studied her surroundings well. Her eye color matched the color of her scales. She was quite nice looking. Some parts of her resembled her mother, other parts did not.
"Nice to meet you, Flame." Rosette said, "How old are you?" Flame's permanent looks would not - could not be determined until he turned six. Just like any other charmander. Their looks constantly changed during the first six years.
"I am one. I turn two tommorrow." Flame told her, quietly.
"Aw, you poor thing. Your just a baby." She said as she took him from Scarlet and cradled him in her arms.
"What is going to happen to him, mom?" Rosette asked. Flame relaxed in Rose's arms. Strangely, though they did not seem that strong, they definatly had plenty of power.
Scarlet led Rosette over to the "table" and took Flame from her. Scarlet set Flame down on one of the largest "chairs". She ordered Rosette to sit down and called the other two kids over to the table.
After everyone was seated, Scarlet stood on the other side of the table, facing the four kids.
"First comes the introductions." Scarlet said. Everyone looked at Flame. " Flame, this is Tolkein, Katelyn, and you have already met Rosette." Scarlet said gently to Flame as she pointed, in turn, to each of the three kids, " Tolkein, Katelyn, This is Flame."
"Hi." Flame said meekly.
"Hi, Flame!" Said Tolkein excitedly.
"Hi, Flame." Katelyn said.
With the introductions through, Scarlet told Flame's story. "I heard a racket nearby while you three were gone and I went to check out what the noises were. I think I walked in right on time. A huge fireball was headed straight at Flame and it was deadly accurate. I reacted as fast as I could and I sent my own fireball straight at the one that was headed for Flame. my fireball collided with Flame's brother's fireball. The two fireballs created one and were sent off course because of mine. They collided with a nearby tree. Amazingly, the fireballs just dissapated and only left a scorched mark of the tree. That probably has something to do with the recent rain. I discovered that the older charmander - Flame's brother - was trying to ditch Flame. According to Flame his name is Fiery. Flame told me that his mother told Fiery to take Flame and get as far away from the nest as possible. That is all that is known." She said. " Flame is now a part of this family. Be nice to him."
Scarlet left the table and went over to the large basin. She lifted one of the smaller bowls out of it and walked around it to the "Berry Burrow" as Flame later learned it was called.
While Scarlet was getting berries, Flame studied Tolkein and Katelyn.
Tolkein was several inches taller than Flame and he had brighter orange scales. His eyes were a emerald green color. His claws were caked in mud from playing in the dirt. His entire body except for his head and tail had a layer of dust over it. Katelyn was cleaner and bigger. She fell in between Tolkein and Rosette. Her claws were a little muddier than Tolkein's though. She, too, had red in her scales. Her red didn't tint all the scales. Instead, She had a stripe on either side that reached from the edge of her belly to her back. The two stripes connected on her back, kind of like a wristband. Her eyes were Ruby colored. The sunlighted glinted off of them if she tilted her head in just the right fashion.
By the time that Flame had finished studying Tolkein and Katelyn, Scarlet had piled several berries up on the table. She glanced at each of the four in turn before turning away.
"Come on Katelyn, Tolkein. You two need to wash that mud off." She said.
Katelyn and Tolkein slid off of their seats and walked over to Scarlet.
"Do you want to come, too, Flame?" She asked.
Flame nodded and slid down to follow the other three. Rosette watched them leave the clearing before turning back to the berries.
[I guess we will need to gather a lot more berries. She thought.
Scarlet led the three younger charmanders out of the clearing. After a couple of minutes of walking, the four reached a small stream. Tolkein and Katelyn dipped their claws into the stream. The stream easily washed the dirt and mud away their claws. Scarlet filled up the bowls she carried. Flame never noticed that she had picked up the other bowl.
"Okay, you two stand still." Scarlet told Tolkein and Katelyn. She dumped the bowls' contents over their heads. The water ran down their bodies and took the majority of the dirt with it. Scarlet refilled the bowls and repeated the procedure. After repeating it a couple more times both charmanders were clean.
Their tail flames had been diminished but not blown out. Scarlet breathed some fire on each of their tails to restore their strength and heat.
Scarlet refilled the two bowls and led them back to the clearing - their home.
Flame, Tolkein, and Katelyn all climbed back onto their seats.
In front of Flame was a large notch. He stuck his paw in it. The hole, Flame realized, went down by about 3 inches.
"What are these holes for?" Flame asked.
Rosette answered. "Flame, Do you see how the berries have all this dirt on them? Well, you put water in the holes. what you do is you stick the berry in the hole, which is filled with water. When you pull the berry out of the water the dirt washes off. Then, you have a clean berry." She explained.
Scarlet emptied the water from the bowls into the holes and went back to the stream for more. After al of the holes had been filled she filled the large basin with water. Later, Scarlet explained that she filled the basin too to refill the holes if the water got too dirty. She also showed him how the notches were emptied.
Once all of the holes were filled and the basin was filled, Scarlet sat down.
"Tuck in." She said once she was seated.
Flame reached for one of the berries. The first one he picked up was an Oran Berry. He dropped it into the water and pulled it back out just as he was told to. Flame ate a good amount of berries.
When Flame finished, he was bloated.
" Do you always eat like that?" Katelyn Asked.
" No, I didn't get to eat breakfast this morning because my old mom made my brother and me leave. And Fiery didn't get me any food when he ate. And I couldn't climb the tree." Flame answered.
" Well, you are not going to miss any meals here unless something goes wrong." Scarlet stated.
Flame yawned.
"I'm sleepy." Tolkein whined.
"Come on everyone, let's go to bed. It has been a long day. " Scarlet said.
Scarlet let all of them to a large burrow. The other three kids crawled in and laid down. Each one curled into a tight ball.
"Come on, Flame." Scarlet beckoned.
Scarlet, too, walked in and laid down but before she curled up, she made sure Flame was comfortable.
I like my new home. I hope I don't lose this one, too. Flame thought before passing out.
Well, I hope everyone liked this chapter.
